    Dear Users,

    here we collect and post Tips and Tricks about the new version, as well as example files. to not cluster this thread and keep it readable, it is closed for posting, please understand. Post questions or wishes to it, please in the according 1.8 help thread in the help section of the forum.

    we will post here more and more over the next days and weeks, also videos about the new feature usage. as we worked until last minute on the update itself, the files and tutorials come over next days, also a new manual as many of you wished, more usage orientated.

    a first bunch of files come today at release day over night, short after we uploaded the update v1.8 itself, so check back here again soon.
    please note it is forbidden to use this scenes or any parts of it in any other content than VRAYforC4D, and it is strictly forbidden to distribute any copy anywhere, even if adapted or changed.

    Example new V-Ray Multi-pass 32 / 8 bit, psd & c4d files:

    for 32bit multi-pass (recommended work flow):
    - see that save is set to 32bit format,
    - set on "multipass" + "post effects" (+ if you want RGBA) in the c4d render settings
    - open the vray multipass manager, and set your multi pass channels on, activate "apply color mapping" in the channel options if not on yet
    - see that c4d lwf is ON (is default on in c4d document settings)
    - see that color mapping is correct 32bit workflow with LWF gamma 2.2, best linear mode (but also reinhard might be possible),"adoption only" ON
    - render and save as 32bit (psd) file,
    - open, p.e. in psd,make sure to choose "use embedded profile" (from the file),this step is essential, and set layers like in example psd file

    for 8bit multi-pass ( use 8bit mp only for simple things, otherwise the real 32bit system for best quality):
    - see that save is set to 8bit format,
    - set on "multipass" + "post effects" (+ if you want RGBA) in the c4d render settings
    - open the vray multipass manager, and set your multi pass channels on, activate "apply color mapping" in the channel options if not on yet
    - see that c4d lwf is ON (is default on in c4d document settings)
    - see that color mapping is with LWF gamma 2.2, linear mode ,"adoption only" ON
    - render and save as 8bit (psd) file,
    - open in psd, make sure to choose "use embedded profile" (from the file),this step is essential,and set layers like in example psd file:

    Here some important info on proxy instance use:

    if you want to texture different 3d render instances(proxy) with different materials, this is very possible in vray. but please note to make this feature active,you should not hide the original object/group. hiding the original would also not save any in ram or speed with instances,
    Here some first basic infos on vray shaders:

    >> for all bitmaps you shoudl use vrayadvbitmap or vray bitmap.the vray adv(anced)bitmap has the advantage that it has something like the c4d filter shader built it,so you can color/gamma, brighness correct without the need of an extra shader direct in it. the quality of the vraybitmap shaders is a bit better than the internal c4d ones. in special if using hdri images. you do not need to change here to srgb mode anymore, the vraybitmap shaders do this correct from start.

    >> for a layer type of shader uses the "layered shader", you can add as many shaders you want,yo can also stack them hierarchical endless (layer shader in a layer shader etc),there is a button to add layer channels. make sure to have slider to 100% for all,and have set the on/off button to "on" for all.
    best is to use c4d copy/paste command to place and copy your shaders.

    >> for dirt use best the new dirt vray shader, you can put it anywhere and also layer or stack now.

    >>for gradient use the "ramp" shader, it is the one nearest to c4d gradient(but can do some more)

    >>for custom Fresnel shader: we recommend using most time the built in vray IOR which is a physical Fresnel (in specular and refraction channel),
    but if you need a custom Fresnel use the vray falloff shader, it can do all the c4d frensel can do any quite some more.

    >> fusion shader: use the blend shader for it, or the vray mix shader can also stack endless, combine with any other shader.
    the vray mix shader has some more advanced settings

    >> for tiles there is the vray tile shader.it is not exact the c4d tiles shader,but has some very interesting random features, also yo can use bitmaps input to tile
    use the random and offset functions,etc

    >>noise: there is no 1:1 replacement for the very powerful c4d noise, there are however some noise shaders in vray that can be endless a stacked and produce very complex noises. also 3d noises.the thing is that in vray shaders every color input can be another (noise) shader again.
    various "noise" shaders (all being able to combine)are: rock, noise, noise max, granite, leather, cellular,marble,marble max, smoke,speckle, splat,stucco,swirl,vray cell,vray flagstone,vray rock & vray vein.a s aid you can stack one noise into the other (endless)resulting in very complex noise formations.of yourse you can also layer and mix them or combine with dirt and other parametric inputs.these are mostly all 3d shaders so can be used very nice also for volume environment fog p.e.

    also as you can use for each color input also a bitmap you can use the vray noise shaders to make crazy complex and nice noises that are procedual and bitmaps based at same time, like try a vray rock noise,w ith using 2 bitmaps shaders as inout(!), bets like 2 stome texturs,or 2 grimme noise bitmaps.

    >> edge shader:some not direct in c4d but very nice: best try it out,it renders the edges and segments of objects (wires)

    >> water, is a high end 3d vector shader for vector displacement,use in displacement material(3d displacement mode, rgb , vector mode on),it is based onthe tessendorf waves algorithms. start with wind magnitudes of around 10,patch size 500+,resolution 512. this makes very realist and nice waves.

    >>for color correction:as said the vrayadvbitmap has already to most often used in,if you want more or stack in complex ways use vray color correction node and/or vray color balance node.of course you can again combine and stack all pretty endless

    >> checker:is vray checker shader, they work somehow similar, the main difference is that in vray you can use shaders or bitmaps as input, that allows quite some nice effects with it

    >> bulge is nice for texturing mesh or area lights

    >> intensity is good if you want to multiply any input shader (to produce hdri values p.e)

    >> cloth shader is nice to make any kind of procedural fabrics, curtains etc

    >> grid:makes what the name suggests,only that you can load vraybitmaps inside the fillings,so this can be used for nice bitmap work, specially if layered

    >> invert:does invert any input(bitmap, shader )

    >> snow is a nice shader that puts "snow" or stuff, on top of things (depending on inclination),again this can be textures, stacked and layers to your needs,also used in displacement

    >> AColorOp:is a great shader to mix, blend or calculate A/B inputs in various ways, again each input can be another shader,bitmap, endless hierarchical stacked.

    the shaders can bebe also strechted and scale tuned using the UVW paramter tab. using the "Crop" mode,you can use H,W values to 2d scale the shader, and U,V to offset it in 2d directions, with UV noise feature you can give a irregular, wave like noise variation to any shader, turn the check box on and play with size, amount,levels and phase values.


    a file showing the new vray multi shader in vrayshaders list (it sfirst incarnation, quite some more features to come in it in next time),also assmallsideexample the new vray ambient light in it with a dirt materialin the ambient light to give you a very fast gi like light solution woth direct light plus "gi" (gi shader basednot activated via rendersetting, not a simple AO. is flicker free for animation)

    on vray multi shader (make sure to also checkout the script in post above about random id usage),
    for the multi shader also a neat way to use with random ids inc4d:

    In C4d you can assign random values to almost any input by typing x+rnd("anynumber"). This will add a random number between 0 and "anynumber" to the current value.
    If we combine that with the new VrayMultishader we can assign the materials to a random object id using the vray comp tag.
    See images at the bottom.
    Just make sure you have assigned 1 to all your object id's before you type in x+rnd("anynumber"). "Anynumber should correspond to the number of materials you setup in

    here a new free example scene for VRAYforC4D 1.8, with beautiful 3d HQ grass plants, free for your use (thanks to HQ plants/Tong, the producer)

    the scene render a huge amount of geometry, via proxy instanced geometry elements, with full gi, translucency, reflection, speculars, DOF, Mograph,Vray shader use, and DR ready
    here in this example we rendered on 3 DR nodes on V-Ray 1.8.1.59
    export and prepare time for proxies had been onyl 5 seconds, whole render time was about 1min 33 sec, ram usage for vray alone to render only about 1-2gb extra:

    please do read the read me.tx file, slow computers,notebooks etc might not be able to open the scene (as c4d alone takes quite some ram and power to show in editor)

    here a scene for the new support form MAXON's v15 grass generator feature. (for now only on procedual c4d objects)
    it renders in vray as real proxy like geometry via the V-ray hair primitive (acts full like real geometry but very fast and very few ram):

    here the c4c file, you need Cinema4d v15 with a version that includes the maxon grass feature,on a primitive object:

    and here a new very interesting video from Josef Barash for all,
    on hair usage with the very new native vrayforc4d 1.8 hair support. vray now supports maxon, hair, fur grass (and feathers*),converting them on the fly to V-Ray hair procedurals which are similar to proxy geometry, being real3d but taking very few ram even if used in huge amount.it now supports also base tex sampling, root tip color and all the special ways to color the hair or fur, similar to the native c4d hair.

    the advantage is that the vray hair is ture 3d, not 2.5 d as the internal rendering of hair,so it will work in DOF,b ehind refraction,correctly in reflections, also glossy, in gi, SSS, etc,and they can be calculated ona physical correct way.
    specially if you use the new new physical V-Ray HAIR brdf 3 material from very latest vray core 2.4, which is now included already in VRAYforC4D 1.8.

    is supports animation,dynamics of hair,and can be directly rendered also via V-Ray DR:

    Josef Barash made 2 new videos on the new fast SSS2 material in 1.8., we have some very cool features in C4D vray, which are not yet even in the 3dmax or maya vray:) (the geomode)
